Prof. Dr. Tom Buringuriza
Prof. Dr. Tom Buringuriza is also Academic Liaison Ugandan Affairs at SSM Research Center
SSM wants to explore potential collaborations and partnerships with academic institutes in Uganda. The goal is to seek synergies by bringing doctoral programs (Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, and Doctor of Business Administration, DBA) to Uganda, to contribute to the body of academic knowledge and the social and economic development of the region.
Dr. Tom Buringuriza is the Country Manager for Armour Energy an Australian Oil and Gas exploration company that was licensed for the Kanywataba License Area in South Western Uganda. He managed the bid process and also negotiated the Production Sharing Agreement for this Australian Group. He has now recruited staff and procured various contractors to implement the work program of the company including handling Government relations and all compliance issues as required by the regulator in Uganda. He is a Board Member of Citibank in Uganda and also a Member of the Advisory Board for the Stonechair Capital Corporation’s Energy Africa Fund based in Alberta Canada; a Private Equity Fund financing energy projects in Sub Saharan Africa. He facilitates investments to set up in Uganda and has experience in agriculture, oil and gas, shipping and other sectors.
With experience in both public and private sector set ups, spanning over three decades, he has valuable contacts and knowledge of the different investment environments and processes in the East African region. He has experience in senior management including with multi nationals such as DHL and MAERSK, and with development agencies, such as GIZ.
At the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) he was deputy and later Ag. CEO. Earlier in the nineties and working as Senior Economist at the Civil Aviation Authority, he participated in world tourism expos to promote Uganda as a tourism destination, as a way of promoting air traffic to the Entebbe International Airport.
Tom was a National Consultant for Skills Development in Uganda working for the GIZ program for Oil and Gas. He is a member of the Presidential Investors’ Round Table (PIRT), a platform that advises Government of Uganda on how to improve the investment climate for Oil and Gas and other sectors. The members of this body are appointed by the President of Uganda and coordinated by the Prime Minister.
He holds a Bachelor of Statistics Degree (B. Stat) from Makerere University, a MBA, a MPHIL and a Doctor of Business Administration from Maastricht School of Management (MsM). Tom wrote a thesis on Promotion of Employment Oriented Skills Development in Uganda for his MBA. For his Doctorate, he wrote a thesis on Investment Promotion and Facilitation and new investments in Uganda.
He also took professional courses by the World Bank and IFC and attended seminars in leadership and Management. He accomplished consultancies for private sector clients, development partners and public-sector clients, in Strategic Planning, Organizational development and he is an Associate of the HPO Center for Africa. He lectured to MBA students at ESAMI, then a MsM campus in Africa, in Strategic Planning and Operations Management in Harare, Zimbabwe and in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
